Make & Break Competition (Spring 2016)

On Tuesday 1st March at the University of Birmingham's Civil & Mechanical Engineering Building Design Centre we held our Make & Break Competition.

This year's brief was a tower structure, with the aim to maximise the height of the load, whilst still building efficiently. Six teams, each made up of a mix of individuals, competed against each other - to construct the best structure within the time of 50 minutes.

This year the range of materials available was greater, making for a more diverse range of structures and construction techniques. Each material had a cost associated with it, and it was up to the teams to decide the most efficient way to complete the build and support their load.

Prizes were awarded to the winners, as well as certificates for second and third places. The final results list is:

1st - Team 2 - 48 points  -  WINNERS

2nd - Team 3 - 44 points

3rd - Team 1 - 42 points

4th - Team 4 - 21 points

5th - Team 5 - 15 points

6th - Team 6 - 1 point

Eastside Locks Site Visit (Summer 2015)

On Wednesday 26th August, a group of young members visited Alumno's Eastside Locks Development, being constructed by John Sisk & Son Ltd.

No1 City Locks is student accommodation building being constructed on a derelict site in the centre of Birmingham, as part of the city’s Eastside Regeneration project.

Construction is progressing on site, with the piled foundation and insitu concrete podium complete. The superstructure is currently being formed of precast concrete unit, and so this visit provided a great opportunity to witness and learn more about precast construction.

City Locks complements the historic canal-side environment, fitting in with other developments and minimising disruption to the local community, while bringing key benefits. Level access and an active ground floor frontage encourage a new active and sustainable canal-side environment and offer improved safety by increased use of the area.

Joint Event - Hidden Spaces (Summer 2015)

This sell-out exclusive evening view of this year's Hidden Spaces exhibition took place on Wednesday 24th June.

You may have seen a preview at New Street Station - a fascinating collection of images and short films of 24 of Birmingham's treasures will be on displace, within the stunning setting of the former bank.

Guest speakers from Make Architects, plus a variety of other events, were there in support of LoveBrum.

Project Talk (Summer 2015) Slipstream Sculpture

On National Women in Engineering Day we were delighted to be able to hear from:

Ralph Parker - Price & Myers

Completed in 2014, this 78 m long structure is now suspended in the new Heathrow Terminal 2 building. The sculpture is based on the movement of an aerobatic stunt plane flying through the terminal’s entrance space.

Spanning between four steel columns, 20 m above the floor and clad in riveted aluminium, Slipstream has a hidden armature structure that supports its continuously undulating plywood stress-skin surface.

We find out about this structure, which has over 32,000 unique steel, plywood and aluminium parts, together with over a quarter of a million rivets carefully positioned across its surface. 

Two and a half years and £2 million was spent on the design and construction of this fantastic sculpture, which will be seen by 20 billion a year as they pass through Terminal 2.

Networking (Summer 2015)

At the start of June we held our summer networking event!

The event provided the opportunity to network with professionals in the region from a variety of construction and engineering related courses and careers. 

There was also food, drinks and a themed quiz, which everyone participated in - congratulations to the "Pink" team for winning. They were awarded prizes of wine and Amazon vouchers for their success.

WINNER! - Young Structural Engineers' International Design Competition

The winners of The Young Structural Engineers International Design Competition were announced on 18 March, during a reception at our Bastwick Street Headquarters in London.
The International Design Competition is organised every three years by The Institution’s Educational Trust to encourage ingenuity, imagination and inventiveness in young structural engineers.

In 2014 a brief was set to design a temporary solution for accommodation following a natural disaster. Entries were received from across the globe, and we are proud to announce that our very own Will Evans, was the winner of the Undergraduate Prize, with his Cubeaid scheme:

The concept of this design is that a transitional shelter is a pre-fabricated, modular, self-assembled cuboid. The proposed structure form is a hybrid-timber/steel pin jointed frame which has hinged vertical and horizontal members which allow the structure to be easily erected. The tensile memberane keeps the structure light-weight and easy to hanfle and move. The individual shelter forms part of a modular system where they can be 'stacked' to two storeys high, and a maximum of four units in either direction.

Will is also the incoming Vice-Chair of our Young Members' Group - congratulations!
