Demolition Engineering Talk (Spring 2016)

On Thursday 28th April, Andre Jaarson came to talk to us about demolition engineering. Andre is a qualified civil engineer with over 13 years’ experience working within the engineering and demolition industry. He currently works for Coleman & Company designing temporary works for demolition projects across the nation.

He told us how the MAN Holder was to be de-constructed using the innovative method of raising the internal piston, cold cutting the roof free, using a floating working platform to enable cutting and lifting down of sections of the holder with bespoke roof top cranes.

This was the gas holder demolition featured in the television series “Demolition – The Wrecking Crew”. Watch this to hear more about the constraints surrounding the site, the engineering behind the innovative techniques and physicality’s of cold cutting the holder down.

Project Talk: Three Snowhill (Spring 2016)

On Thursday 7th April, Malcolm Davidson (Director, WSP) gave a talk to the IStructE young members about Three Snowhill.

Three Snowhill is a long-awaited office scheme, offering Grade A offices over 16 storeys, along with leisure, retail and parking space. Situated alongside Snow Hill station it will join neighbours One and Two Snowhill.

Due to the history of the site, the scheme involves remodelling the existing five levels of basement and cores, which will serve the proposed development. Above ground the structure will be steel-framed, wrapped in curtain walling on all elevations. Three Snowhill will change the skyline  of the city centre and in doing so intends to set new standards for regional office development.

This was a unique opportunity to hear about this exciting local project! Thanks very much to Malcolm Davidson for speaking.
